Q1: What Procedures can I use the VeraSIL™ Protective Spray for?

Q2: What is the chemical makeup of VeraSIL™ Protective Spray?

A: VeraSIL™Protective Spray contains two ingredients: 10 ppm NaoSilver in Deionized water and 3% Hydrogen Peroxide. The combination of these two ingredients are ca- pable of removing Polymicrobial Biofilms associated with a many bacteria commonly found colonizing a Filtration Mask.

Q3: Does VeraSIL™ Protective Spray contain glycerin, petroleum by-products or any other chemotoxic ingredients which are common to all disinfectant liquids?

A:  No.

Q4:  What is the Recommended application time for the VeraSIL™ Protective Spray?

A: Apply a liberal coating of the Spray to the inside surface of the Filtration Mask using 3-5 squirts of the pump bottle and then let dry and then use the Mask as di rected. Essentially, the VeraSIL™ Protective Spray is made up of ultra-fine NanoSIlver particles in highly purifed water along with dilute Hydrogen Peroxide so it is safe and non toxic to use when ingested or absorded.  It can remain in contact with the Facial tissues without casuing any irritation to the lips, cheeks, nose, mouth or eyes.

VeraSIL™ Protective Spray product is designed to help disinfect the Filtration Mask and help prevent additional bacterial and viral particles from passing thru the filtration material.

LIMITATIONS & CHALLENGES WITH CURRENT HOSPITAL GRADE DISINFECTANT SOLUTIONS ……..

There is an ever growing concern over the spread of disease/ infection such as H1N1 and Multi Drug Resistant bacteria such as MRSA and VRE and not just in Healthcare but the Food Services industry as well..…To combat the spread of disease and the issue of bacterial resistnace manufacturers have created more and more potent chemical based germicidal agents.

There is ALOT of confusion as to the differences between Cleaners; Detergents, Sanitizers and Disinfectants which is why these terms are sometimes mistakingly used interchangeably….. Sanitizing is a chemical process that lessens and even kills some germs on surfaces to make them safe for contact. Disinfecting requires a stronger solution to destroy germs rather than simply reducing them. Both methods are a step up from regular cleaning with detergents because cleaning only removes visible dirt and contaminants. When you sanitize or disinfect, you are removing potentially harmful bacteria and fungii that are usally not visble to the naked eye. Deodorizing is the simple act of removing a smell or odor and this can be achieved by all of the above but Deodorizers are not Disinfectants. There are also three distinctly different levels of Disinfection…..

High-Level Disinfection is the procedure which kills vegetative microorganisms and inactivates viruses, but not necessarily high numbers of bacterial spores. Such disinfectants are capable of sterilization when the contact time is relatively long (e.g., 6 to 10 hours). As high-level disinfectants, they are used for relatively short periods of time (e.g., 10 to 30 minutes). These chemical germicides are potent sporicides and, in the United States, are classified by the FDA as “Sterilant/Disinfectants”. They are formulated for use on critical care medical devices, NOT on environmental surfaces such as laboratory benches or floors.

Intermediate-Level Disinfection is the procedure which kills vegetative microorganisms, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, all fungi, and inactivates most viruses. Chemical germicides used in this procedure often correspond to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved “Hospital Grade Disinfectants” that are also “tuberculocidal.” They are used commonly as detergent germicides in healthcare settings such as dental, medical and veterinary offices as well as labs and surgical suites for disinfection of benches, counter tops and other inamimate surfaces, as part of a decontaminiation protocol to prevent cross contaimination and the spread of disease/infection(s). 

Low-Level Disinfection is the procedure which kills most vegetative bacteria except M. tuberculosis, some fungi, and inactivates some viruses. The US EPA approves chemical germicides used in this procedure as “Sanitizers” which are intended for use on inaminate surfaces in bathrooms or on eating surfaces both at home and in public restaurants where the risk of picking up or transferring M. tuberculosis is less of a risk than in a hospital setting. Low level disinfectants include products such as diluted Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach and or NaOCL) which are capable of killing weaker bacteria and viruses such as Poliovirus or Salmonella enterica.

What nearly ALL Cleaners, Detergents, Sanitizers AND Disinfectants have in common is the broad array of toxic chemicals with which they are manufactured….

The most common of these chemicals include: Phenolics; Bleaches, Ammonium Sulfates/Chlorides, Alcohols, Pine Oils, Citrus Oils, Quaternary Ammonium and Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxidases, Glutaraldehydes, Ortho-phthalaldehydes, Formaldehydes, Peracetic Acids, and Hypochlorous Acids. Such chemcials can corrode certain materials, are volatile, flammable, as well as cytotoxic and highly irritating to exposed human tissue while others have a poor shelf life and do not mix well with other chemicals and have limited pH range.  Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite or NaOCL) for example, does not kill all bacteria,12,16-18 nor does it remove all of the smear layer.19 NaOCL is not biocompatible and has limited activity in the presence of organic matter.  NaOCL is also corrosive to some metals, makes a poor cleaner/detergent when there is a heavy soil. Additonally, NaOCL is not compatible with many other chemical ingredients such as surfactants, solvents, thickeners, because when mixed together, they can produce deadly gas by-products. Serious Label Warnings exist with the use of Sodium hypochlorite:When NaOCL comes in contact with other cleaners containing ammonia or chlorine compounds, fatal levels for ammonia gas or chlorine gas can be produced. Never mix bleach with other chemicals.”

The Problem: – It’s almost impossible to achieve a disinfecting action on a Face mask with an Intermediate level Disinfectant or even a low level Sanitizer due to the risk of chemical irritation by these chemical disinfectants to either the operators intra-oral and extra-oral tissues including the skin, eyes and nasal cavities.

Although there is alot of research and development into a potential anti-viral Mask where certain chemicals are being impregnated into the filter fiber material itself, this technology applies to only one or two specific types of face masks – NOT the entire industry. So, todate, there is no comprehensive broad based industry solution to this problem.

The use of silver technology has recently gained favour with the US FDA with its clearance of products like Surfacine which is a water-insoluble antimicrobial-drug compound (silver iodide) in a surface-immobilized coating (a modified polyhexamethylenebiguanide) that is capable of chemical recognition and interaction with the lipid bilayer of the bacterial outer cell membrane by electrostatic attraction. The intimate microbial contact with the surface results in transfer of the antimicrobial-drug component (silver) directly from the coating to the organism. But this is not a sterilant/Disinfectant application – this is simply a low level Disinfectant for non critical care surfaces and inaminate objects such as bedpans and counter tops etc.

Two of the most common Hospital Grade Disinfectant solutions used in the Dental office are Cavicide and Optim 28. Both of these chemical disinfectant solutions contain some very nasty /noxious chemicals…..Neither of which you would want to spray or place onto a Face Mask. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet, for its Cavicide Liquid Surface Disinfectant product (manufactured by Metrex Research, LLC, ) it contains 17.2% Isopropanol; 1-5% Ethylene Glycol MonobutylEther (EGBE) and .28% Diisobutylphenoxyethoxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride. The safety and toxicity of these ingredients should be of concern. For example, Ethylene Glycol is a solvent and under existing EPA guidelines, EGBE is judged to be a possible human carcinogen, Group C.* The minimum lethal oral dose of EGBE in humans is equivalent to approximately 100 mL for a 70 kg person.**

Optim 28 is an Intermediate Level Disinfectant Manufactured by Virox Technologies Canada and distributed by SciCan – A Coltene Group Company. According to its MSDS sheet it includes Diphosphonic acid, Octanesulfonic acid, Potassium salt and 50% Accelerated Hydrogen peroxide at a concentation of 1-7%.  According to its GHS Classification, these chemicals have acute oral toxicity and are poisonous if swallowed and can cause serious eye damage. These chemcials are not only toxic and extreme irritants to the eyes and skin but, 50% Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide is an extreme oxidizer and is explosive/flammable. 

All of the above chemcials are highly cytotoxic to human tissue and none of them can be used by healthcare workers or placed directly in contact with the skin with out Personal Protective Equipment (“PPE”).

The use of silver ions as a chemotherapeutic wound dressing have a long clinical history of success but, the challenge with ionic silver wound wash solutions is that the silver ion only has a plus one charge (missing one electron) so when it targets a bacterial cell wall and grabs an electron it becomes “neutralralized’ – it then looses its charge and any residual ability to affect the microrganism. This means that the concentration of charged ionic silver particles reqired to provide antibacterial activity must be extremely high.  Additionally, ionic silver has not been proven effective against polymicrobial biofilms and so if you cannot remove/irradiacte the intracellular matrix which ‘houses’ multiple bacterial and fungal strains then you cannot effectively disinfect and remove the source of the infection.

For these reasons, there are only a few wound cleansing solutions which contain ionic silver. The most common is a Topical Silver Sulfadiazine solution which has lost its significance based on recommendations to avoid the topical use of chemotherapeutics, its cytotoxicity and its risk of absorptive side effects.

For much the same reasons, 3 Meta-analyses performed by Cochrane et al., * came to the following conclusions about ionic silver: “Silver [Ionic] can inhibit wound secretion and odor, and some studies showed a promotion of wound healing”. A recent meta-analysis of clinical trials over the last 15 years shows 39 clinical trials on the subject of [ionic] silver inwound treatment. In 28 of the 39 controlled studies, positive aspects were described for wounds, such as accelerated wound healing and bacterial reduction as well as positive aspects in quality of life or pain reduction. On the basis of an expert recommendation, the use of [ionic] Silver in the treatment of critically colonized or infected wounds, as well as in the case of a detected MDRO (Multi Drug Resistant Organisms), was recommended for a maximum of 14 days.

The aforementioned products are unable to perform with the same level of efficacy and performance as the VeraSIL Protective Spray Nanotechnology product.

Until a self sanitizing and disinfecting Mask can be created where the fibers have been imprgnated with a disinfectant that is safe for the operator to wear on their face, the SIMPLE WAY to address this problem is to use an Antimicrobial, Disinfectant Spray to coat/spray the inner (hydrophillic side) of the mask with a “skin friendly solution that will not harm humans but that is deadly to microorganisms. This way it could be sprayed on all different types of Masks.

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH IS REQUIRED….. AND NOW!

Currently, there are very stringent protocols and safety guidelines which have been established by the CDC, NIOSH, EPA, FDA and local jurisdictions for the proper handling and disposal of Hospital Grade Disinfectants because of their potential toxicity to the water auquifer, the environment and the healthcare worker. This includes the use of specific Personal Protection Equipment (P.P.E’s) during both use and disposal.

NanoSilver technology is known to be safe for ingestion and at the same time highly Antimicrobial with both short acting sporocidal activity as well as long standing microbial persistance. Numerous studies have also shown that NanoSilver and Hydrogen Peroxide are highly synergistic together and which act as a powerful cleaner / detergent / sanitizer and disinfectant at the right concentrations. When you combine NanoSilver and Hydrogen Peroxide you not only gain a powerful cleaner, you not only create a powerful Disinfectant with excellent bacterial and viral persistance capable of killing a broad spectrum of microorganisms and their Polymicrobial Biofilms but you also create a product that is safe and non  toxic to use around healthcare workers and that  is also safe for disposal.

This specific NanoSilver in ultra-pure deionized water, has been found to be completely safe for human ingestion/absorption and inhalation. In fact, it was recently tested in the largest human clinical trial on the saftey, efficacy and human ingestion of NanoSilver. Errors in shipment must be reported within 14 days of invoice date. All return authorization numbers become invalid 90 days after date of issue.
