VeraSIL™ UltraTuff Nitrile Exam Gloves are to be used as the primary means of barrier protection for all healthcare workers who come in skin to skin contact with patients (medical,dental,veterinary and beauty) and or their bodily fluids (as all patients must be treated as potentially infectious).  The use of the VeraSIL™ UltraTuff Nitrile Exam Gloves helps to lower the risk of cross contamination and spread of disease. VeraSIL™ UltraTuff Nitrile Exam Gloves can also be used by workers who handle or prepare, food, to prevent the cross contamination and transmission of bacteria.

LIMITATIONS & CHALLENGES WITH CURRENT NITRILE GLOVES ……..

There is an ever growing concern over the spread of disease/ infection such as H1N1 and Multi Drug Resistant bacteria such as MRSA and VRE and not just in Healthcare but the Food Services industry as well..…One of the primary ways in which the industry is able to combat the spread of disease was originally mandated by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This required  the use of universal barrier precautions which included the use of disposable gloves and masks by all workers in the Veterinary, EMS, Dental, Medical and Beauty markets. In todays world, the vast majority of gloves are utilized as single use, disposable, powder free, ambidextrous gloves made of a synthetic rubber product called Nitrile (“N-Dex”).  Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR, Buna-N, and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, is a synthetic rubber copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene. 

The use of Nitrile gloves help reduce the incidence of allergy and irritation but they are also puncture-resistant, frictionless, and have a longer shelf life compared to latex so, they form a more complete barrier. This helps reduce the incidence of Cross Contamination Hospital Acquired Infections (“HAIs”) and Surgical Site Infections (“SSIs”) from the indavertent transfer of microorganisms through pin hole defects in the gloves.

Even when the use of gloves is mandated, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) recommend washing your hands with soap and running water prior to donning and after doffine your gloves as one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and to prevent spreading infections to others. In the absence of soap and water, the CDC also recommends using an Alcohol-based Hand Sanitizer containing at least 60 percent Alcohol.*,**

Growing Industry Issues:

In 2018 it was estimated that in excess of 100Million Nitrile gloves are now being used and disposed of into landfills every year and this market is the fasted growing segment of the glove industry – with growth in excess of 15% per annum.  Studies have shown that Nitrile is a non-biodegradable synthetic rubber copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene which can take up to 100 years to break down in landfills. The current Nitrile glove market is not environmentally friendly and is not carbon neutral.

For these reaosons various regulatory bodies have been pressuring Nitrile glove manufacturers to develope more bio-degradeable and/or recyclable alternatives but, thus far only one Nitrile manufacturer has been successful in creating a Biodegrable Nitrile  (N-Dex) disposable glove. That company utilizes a technology that allows soild bacteria to rapidly break down the polymerized Nitrile material (in as little as 120 days) once it has been placed in the lanfill.

The only problem with this approach (which is true for the entire industry) is that once the healthcare worker has contaminated their Nitrile gloves they should be treated as biohazardous / medical waste, which should not be simply thrown in a lanfill – it first needs to be disinfected /sterilized. This can easily be done before it leaves the healthcare facility by disinfecting the gloves using heat or steam sterilization.

The only other issue with Nitrile gloves, actually applies to the muchb larger healthcare industry in general and that is the issue of bacterial resistance. One of the main vectors of transmission for superbugs (which is tied to Antibiotic resistance) is when resistant bacteria are passed from one inanimate object to another via human contact….. and the cross contaminiation of gloved hands are a key critical part of this growing problem. Without the use of Antimicrobial and anti-viral agents impregnated into the gloves to help completely kill /clear bacterial bio-burdens, the problem of transference from gloves will remain a major contibutor to the perpetuation of this superbug problem. Numerous companies such as Hartalega Holdings and Ansell Medical have devloped Antimicrobial gloves to help reduce SSIs and HAIs but the agressive and toxic nature of the chemcial pesticides contained within the polymer matrix of the glove, has raised concern regarding; a) human absorption and toxicity of these antimicrobial agents and b) their limited antimicrobial effect against specific bacteria.  Thus, the search for a safer, more user friendly and broader based antimicrobial/anti-viral agent is ongoing…….
