LIMITATIONS & CHALLENGES WITH CURRENT FILTRATION MASKS……..

There is an ever growing concern over the spread of disease/ infections such as H1N1, the new Candida auris as well as Multi Drug Resistant bacteria such as MRSA, CRE and VRE in the Healthcare industry but, also in the Food Services industry where foodborne infections such as Camphylobacter, EColi and Salmonella infections are also on the rise.…In addition to stringent Disinfection and Sanitation protocols, one of the primary ways in which these industries combat cross contamination and the spread of infection/disease has been mandated by O.S.H.A. (US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This has required the use of universal barrier precautions which has included the use of disposable Gloves and Masks by all workers in the Veterinary, EMS, Medical, Dental as well as Beauty and Food handling markets. In todays world, the vast majority of Filtration Masks are single use, disposable, non sterile (but clean), Ear loop Masks made of a spun bonded Polypropylene material. The external layer of these Ear Loop Masks is usually water resistant to  help keep workers and patients alike, safe from cross contamination due to splatter from blood, saliva and aerosolized particulates.  According to the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (“NIOSH”) a Filtration Mask is usually certified based on the amount of particulate matter filtered out. An N95 rating, for example, means a Mask filters out 95% of airborne particulates. Likewise an N99 rating, means a Mask filters out 99% of airborne particluates. Unlike the N99 Masks which is usually a 3 layer Mask (“Tri-Ply Mask” with 1 layer of nitrocellulose material sandwiched between 2 layers of spun-bonded Polypropylene)  the N95 Masks are usually made with only two layers of material – which is why they are only able to filter 95% of particulates.

The soft, hypoallergenic spun-bound non woven Polypropylene material commonly found in these Masks is hypoallergenic which helps to reduce the incidence of allergy and irritation.  They are breathable, form fitting and are usually able to filter particles down to .2 – .3 microns as in the case of an N99 Mask. Numerous studies have shown how the use of a Filtration Mask helps to reduce the incidence of Hospital Acquired Infections (“HAIs”) and Surgical Site Infections (“SSIs”) from the indavertent transfer of microorganisms which normally takes place through by aerosolization of bacterial and viral particulates.

It goes without saying that the use of a Filtration Mask should always be used in conjunction with the use of gloves.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) recommend washing your hands with soap and running water prior to donning and after doffing your gloves and Mask as one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and to prevent spreading infections to others. In the absence of soap and water, the CDC also recommends using an Alcohol-based Hand Sanitizer containing at least 60 percent Alcohol.*,**

Growing Industry Issues: – lanfill and bacterial resistance…Polypropylene has poor resistance to chlorinated solvents and aromatics.

In 2018 it was estimated that in excess of 75 Million Disposable Face Masks are now being used and disposed of into landfills every year. The vast majority of these Masks are made from a non-woven spun-bonded Polypropylene plastic material which is a non-recyclable, non-compostable, single-use plastic product and that take hundreds of years to degrade. The disposable Face Mask market is amongst the fastest growing segments of the disposable plastics industry – with growth in excess of 15% per annum.  Studies have shown that this non-biodegradable Spun-bound Polypropylene (synthetic plastic copolymer) can take hundreds of years to decompose, if at all, so it is either incinerated and voided into the air or these same plastics end up in our our lakes and oceans where the effect on our wildlife and numerous edxosystems can be significant. 

The current Filtration Mask market is not environmentally friendly and is certainly not carbon neutral. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, containers and packaging are a huge portion of solid waste in the United States; 77.9 million tons of packaging waste was generated in 2015 alone*.  Admittedly, Masks are not the only things contributing to that waste but, these non-degradable and non-recyclable materials is certainly not helping the issue…. Since Filtration Masks are almost always designed as single-use disposable products this means, each time you use one, you’re generating some sort of waste.

For these reasons various regulatory bodies have been pressuring Disposable Filtration Mask manufacturers to develop more bio-degradeable and/or recyclable alternatives but, thus far no viable commercial products exist although there has been some interesting research into the use of biodegradeable Mask materials out of the Department of Material and Commodity Sciences and Textile Metrology, Lodz University of Technology – an accredited IBWCh laboratory in Łódź, Poland. The research confirmed the biodegradable capabilities of a new class of nonwoven commercial polymers (PLA). The method used for the assessment of biodegradation in a compost environment was testing the mass loss. On the basis of the results,  it was concluded that the nonwovens produced from the PLA materials biodegraded fully after only four weeks of composting. Currently, biodegradability tests are being performed on the prototype filtering mask. Commercialization and fullscale production of the particle filtering mask is anticipated.

The only problem (or challenge) with utilizing a biodegradable Filtration Mask (which is true for the entire Mask industry) is that once the healthcare worker has contaminated their Mask they have created biohazardous / medical waste, which should not be tossed into ‘the garbage’ and then thrown into a landfill – it first needs to be disinfected /sterilized. This can easily be done before it leaves the healthcare facility by disinfecting the Mask using heat or steam sterilization or spraying it with an approppriate disnfectant.

The other issue with Filtration Masks actually applies to the entire industry as a whole and that is the issue of bacterial resistance. One of the main vectors of transmission for supebugs (which is tied to Antibiotic resistance) is when resistant bacteria are passed from one inanimate object to another via human contact….. and the cross contamination from  workers who do not wear an appropriate Filtration Mask are a significant part of this problem.  Without the use of Antimicrobial and anti-viral agents impregnated into the Mask materials (to help completely kill /clear bacterial bio-burdens), the problem of transference from Masks will remain a major contibutor to the perpetuation of this superbug problem. Thus, the search for a safer, more user friendly and broader based antimicrobial/anti-viral agent is ongoing.

Filtration Masks are also a commodity item and while performance is usually assumed, price is always an issue. Items returned within 30 days of purchase with a return authorization number on the outside and inside of the return box will be credited 100% (not refunded) so long as the packaging is still in tact and the majority of the product has not been used.
